Acne is a common skin disorder characterized by clogged pores and pimples. More than four out of five people between the ages of 12 and 24 develop acne at least once. While the disorder is often associated with teenagers, it can affect people of all ages. It's not uncommon for acne to occur in people in their 20s and 30s. And, some people continue to have acne in their 40s and 50s. Some adult women experience mild to moderate acne due to hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, their menstrual cycles, or starting or stopping birth control pills. Acne is rarely a serious medical condition, but it often causes emotional distress and can lead to scarring of the skin. With the right treatment, you can often keep acne under control. Measures also can be taken to reduce scars left by acne.

Abdominal pain can range from mild stomach ache to severe acute pain. The pain is usually nonspecific and can be caused by a variety of conditions. Many organs are found within the abdominal cavity. Sometimes the pain is directly related to a specific organ such as the bladder or ovary. Usually, the pain originates in the digestive system. For example, the pain can be caused by appendicitis, diarrheal cramping, or food poisoning.

The type and location of pain may help the physician find the cause. The intensity and duration of pain must also be considered when making the diagnosis. A few general characteristics of abdominal pain are as follows:

  • Abdominal pain can be sharp, dull, stabbing, cramplike, knifelike, twisting, or boring. Many other types of pain are possible.

  • Abdominal pain can be brief, lasting for a few minutes and then going away, or it can be constant. Sometimes abdominal pain comes on strongly for a while and then lessens for a while.

  • Sometimes abdominal pain can hurt so much you throw up, but it stays intense. Other times, you will feel better after you throw up.

  • Abdominal pain can make you want to stay in one place and not move a muscle. Or the pain can make you so restless you want to pace around trying to find "just the right position."

Menstrual cramps are sharp pains in a woman's lower abdomen that occur when her menstrual period begins and may continue for 2-3 days. Symptoms can range in severity from a mild annoyance to severe pain that interferes with normal activities.

Menstrual cramps are the leading cause of absenteeism in women younger than 30 years. Although over half of women who have menstrual periods experience some discomfort, 10% are temporarily disabled by symptoms.

The following circumstances may make a woman more likely to experience menstrual cramps:

  • She started her first period at an early age (younger than 11 years).

  • Her menstrual periods last 5 days or longer.

  • She is overweight or obese.

  • She smokes cigarettes or uses alcohol.

  • She has never been pregnant.

Breast cancer is the illness that many women fear most, though they're more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than they are of all forms of cancer combined. Still, breast cancer is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer deaths in American women. Although rare, breast cancer can also occur in men — in the United States, more than 200,000 women and around 1,500 men will develop the disease in 2005.
